By the author saying "The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away." he is telling the reader that the kids are becoming animal like. By Jack refusing to give Piggy the conch, we can see that jack does not respect or like Piggy. when Ralph says that Jack is breaking the rules and he says "Who cares?" this tells us that jack does not respect Ralph and is drifting away from society.
This passage is significant in many ways. One, it gets the point across that Jack does not like piggy. Two it shows that Jack is drifting away from society. It also shows jack is obsessed with hunting. It also tells the reader that everybody is drifting away from a lawful world.
I agree. I think that this passage shows how the island has impacted the boys and changed their personalities.
